My mom was a Marine, a single mother who raised three girls and believed in the value and opportunities of education. The more you knew, the better prepared you were to deal with any situation. From the time we could write, she taught us to write our goals out and have a plan to accomplish them. Each time we scratched off an accomplishment, it increased our self-
confidence.
That foundation, and her strong example helped me overcome many challenges in life…like becoming a single mother in college. That was not on my list, but it didn’t change my goal to get a degree. It did, however, add several new items to my list, and taught me the joy of parental love and patience. I found ways to raise my son and daughter and continue my education,
becoming a lifelong learner with three degrees and now working on another.
My mom was a living example of commitment, duty and service–traits I have lived by and motivate me to serve others. I also understand difficulties faced by students—but know what self-confidence and determination can accomplish. We need to impart that message to our students.
